Cars of the Future Might be Required to have Car-to-Car Communication Systems

Note: This information was originally reported by The Verge (http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/3/5374124/department-of-transportation-announces-plans-for-connected-car)

The US Department of Transportation recently addressed plans to require and regulate car-to-car communication systems in all cars manufactured in the future in order to reduce the number of accidents. This proposal developed from a pilot program by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The results of the study will be released in the next few weeks.

Car-to-car communication systems have the potential to prevent crashes and minimize congestion. Rather than using brake lights as an indication for a decelerating car, car-to-car systems can recognize changes in surrounding car's miles-per-hour and adjust speeds relative to surrounding conditions.

In order for all automakers to implement car-to-car communication systems, there is a need for industry standards, which is something the government can regulate. It's hopeful to see that in at least some areas, our government is recognizing how technology is increasing integrating into our lives and identifying where regulatory measures are necessary. Now, if only they would adjust copyright laws to enable more innovation.
